THE FAQ: LEATHER, LAW AND LOGISTICS.
Will all of my cards fit this wallet?
Depends on how many cards, I specify in each product description the capacity. But don't get greedy on day one, leather has a memory. If you cram ten cards into a slot meant for four, that slot now belongs to ten cards forever. Start with your essentials, let the hide stretch and breathe for a week, and then decide if you need to add more.
Who do you use for shipping?
We utilize Royal Mail Tracked 48 for all UK deliveries. Shipping is included in the price of your gear - no surprises at the finish line. Currently we only ship within the UK. If you’re in the EU or the USA, stay on the frequency; we’re expanding our reach very soon.
How long does shipping take?
Royal Mail Tracked 48 typically delivers in around 2 to 3 working days depending on location (excluding Sundays and Bank Holidays). While designed to be faster than standard second-class, it is not a guaranteed 48-hour service and can sometimes take longer. It includes full tracking to the delivery point, with Saturday delivery included. Some remote areas, such as parts of Scotland and offshore locations may take longer.
What is your lead production time?
Because every El Rey piece is made to order, hand-cut, hand-stitched and hand-burnished, the current lead time is 2-5 working days from the moment you hit 'Order' to the moment it leaves the workshop. This can vary during busy periods. Your piece doesn't even exist until you ask for it.
This allows me to carefully craft each article to ensure the highest quality and allow adhesives the proper time to cure. Rushing leather is like rushing a good whiskey - it just ruins the finish.
Once it’s ready, you'll get a dispatch note so you can track its progress.
Do you offer international shipping?
Not yet, but I'm working on it. I just need to sort out the red tape.
What is your return/refund policy?
If your wallet arrives and it’s just not "The One", you have 14 days from the moment it hits your doorstep to tell me you want to part ways. No hard feelings. As soon as that clock runs out, the gear is officially part of your story and we can no longer offer a refund or exchange. Once you’ve broken the news, you have another 14 days to get it back to myself here at headquarters for a full refund.
In the unlikely event you receive the wrong item or the item arrives with a defect I'll cover the return shipping cost, if however you decided you just changed your mind and don't fancy it anymore, then return costs are down to you partner.
If the wallet comes back looking like it’s been through a bar fight or shows signs of the grind (scratches, sweat or card stretching etc.) it's yours to keep - I reserve the right to refuse the refund. Keep it pristine, and I'll return the love. To start a return or to send me a message you can do so here. Goods sent back without first requesting a return will not be accepted.
Once your return hits my bench, I’ll inspect the goods and shoot you an update. If the gear is right, the refund is automatic.
Money usually moves back to your original payment method within 10 business days. Banks have their own pace—give them a moment to catch up. If the banks are dragging their feet and it’s been over 15 days, reach out to elreyleatheruk@gmail.com and I'll track it down.
Do you do exchanges?
No. The fastest way to ensure you get what you want is to return the item you have, and once the return is accepted, make a separate purchase for the new item.
Why don't you use a sewing machine? It would be faster.
A sewing machine uses a "lockstitch" which is two separate threads that loop around each other. If one side snaps, the whole thing unzips like a cheap tent. At El Rey we saddle-stitch by hand with two needles and a single length of thread. It takes ten times longer, but it creates a bond that is physically impossible for a machine to match. If a saddle stitch breaks the other side of the thread stays locked in place and the wallet stays together.
Is this 'Genuine Leather'?
Let’s clear something up: 'Genuine Leather' is a marketing lie. It’s the floor sweepings of the industry, glued together and painted to look like the real thing. It’s the "plywood" of leather. EL REY only uses full-grain vegetable-tanned hides. It’s the top layer, the strongest part, and the only part worth owning. If "Genuine Leather" is a cardboard burger, we’re serving the Wagyu steak.
What kind of materials do you use?
Leather: Sourced from the heart of Tuscany, our Badalassi Carlo Pueblo leather is the ultimate contradiction: ruggedly rustic at first, elegantly polished over time.
This vegetable-tanned shoulder starts with a unique, textured nap that begs to be touched. The more you use it, the darker and glossier it becomes—developing a 'lived-in' character that is uniquely yours. It’s not just aging; it’s evolving.
Thread: Every El Rey piece is hand saddle-stitched with Ritza 25 Tiger thread, a braided polyester thread from the masters at Julius Koch. It’s flat, it’s waxed, and it’s arguably over-engineered. While others use thread that frays at the first sign of friction, ours is built for the long haul. UV-resistant and rot-proof, I can honestly say that it won't degrade over time like cotton or cheap nylon. It’s the kind of durability that ensures your wallet stays together, even if the rest of your life is falling apart. Black thread is used for all colours except Cognac, where Havana Brown is used.
Hardware: El Rey doesn't use just any old hardware; imported directly from Japan, our solid brass Hasi Hato (since 1925) ring/spring snaps are world-famous for that satisfying, crisp click that never gets old. While cheap snap buttons go loose and limp after a few months, these stay tight, secure, and smooth. They won't rust, they won't peel, and like our leather, they develop a gorgeous, moody tarnished look over time. Or, if you prefer them bright, a quick rub brings back the gold-standard shine.
How do I care for my leather products?
Leather products at El Rey are crafted to last a lifetime with proper care. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and moisture. And don't get wasted and put it in the washing machine by mistake.
Can I use leather conditioner on it?
Not for a long time. Badalassi Carlo (the tannery) infuses these hides with so many natural oils and waxes during the tanning process that the leather is basically self-sustaining. Using conditioner too early will just make it mushy. Your hand oils are the only 'conditioner' it needs for the first year. Keep your creams and sprays in the cupboard; just carry the motherfucker.
My wallet has a tiny scratch/mark/scuff on it - is it a mistake?
No, it’s a biography. We use full-grain, vegetable-tanned hides from free-roaming cattle. These animals lived a life - they walked through brambles, bumped into fences, and maybe got into a scrap or two. We don't hide those "scars of life" under a thick layer of plastic paint like the high-street brands do.
Yes, I do my best to avoid any major blemishes. So if you want something perfect and soulless, buy PU leather or vinyl. If you want a piece of pocket art that tells a story, you’re in the right place.
I spilled a drink on it. Is it ruined?
Unless you’re dipping it in acid, it’s fine. If it’s water, pat it dry and let it breathe. If it’s coffee or bourbon, wipe it off and embrace the stain - it’s just another chapter in the story. Pueblo leather is incredibly thirsty; it absorbs the world around it. A pristine wallet belongs to a man who doesn't do anything. Wear your spills like a badge of honour.
Do you do monogramming? Custom orders?
No. Your El Rey wallet will be personalized the old-fashioned way: through the scratches, scuffs and patina it earns while it’s in your pocket. That’s the only ID it needs. As for custom orders, shoot me a message and we'll see what occurs, want a 'LOWLIFE' without the strap and button? I'm sure that can be accommodated.
Will you be introducing new products like notebook covers etc?
Yes, I will be bringing in notebook cases and other EDC pocket slips at some point.
